Antiphona de Profundis

For flute, soprano saxophone and 8-channel soundtrack. It was first performed in the Nicolai Church in Utrecht in februari 2006. The piece is inspired by the tradition of the medieval antiphona, the first manner to create a stereophonic effect by placing two groups of singers or instruments opposed to each other in a church.
Another source of inspiration is the conflict between the western Christian based cultures and the Eastern Islam based cultures, represented by flute and saxophone. The cultures have the same source, looking up 'from the deep' (De Profundis) to heaven, but collide in rules and traditions.
